Timothy Milne Blog Post 4

1) The nuclear arms race is extremely apparent, especially during present day times. The availability, technology, and skills necessary to make massive weaponry, specifically nuclear power, are becoming much easier to come across. Since the ability to create these arms are increasing, it just makes sense that something needs to be done about it before the nuclear arms race gets out of hand and the world in turn destroys each other. In order to change the nuclear arms race into a race for peace, multiple actions need to be taken. One action I would take in order to promote peace would be to remove as much weapon creating materials I could from the United States and other countries. For example, I would stiffen the gun laws to have less availability to fire arms and ammunition. I would also destroy or isolate as much nuclear materials as possible to eliminate the use of it. As well as materials, I would also hold conferences that leaders of countries would attend and explain the significance of peace and what it really would mean for everyone if there wasn’t a threat of nuclear warfare. On the opposite side of the spectrum, I would also promote teaching peace to the younger generations in order for them to understand the meaning of peace before they think of the idea of nuclear warfare. The task of ending the nuclear race would be extremely difficult, but I believe it is possible with a little help from every nation and every person.

2) In his essay, Martin Luther King speaks of two realms of spirituality. The first realm according to king consisted of “spiritual ends expressed in art, literature, morals, and religion.” The second realm was comprised of complex devices, techniques, mechanisms and instrumentalities by means of which we live.” Our country today is leaning almost completely toward the second realm he describes. In a rapidly growing society that we face, we see a higher dependence on technologies and factual explanations for phenomena. In order to balance the scientific aspect of life with the moral aspect, I think that the concept of morals and spirituality should be taught to children when they are young. The best time for people to learn is in the younger stages of their lives. I believe that if more people are taught this aspect of life, they will become less dependent on technologies, mechanics, and physical objects and put a much better and realistic value to spirituality and moral belief.

  1. Removing the weapons sounds like a great place to start, but even on the smaller scale here in the U.S. many people become quite livid at the idea of their right to own a gun, getting taken away. It would be even more interesting to see the reactions of those who have much more dangerous materials... I do however, think you are right about our society being quite a bit uneven, in swaying toward the science sector.

  2. I like your dual approach to solving the problems of war in the world, Tim. Great graphic and good source, too. Education is the key and our hope is indeed with the children. Nice post.
