Erica B Blog Post 3

1)People stereotype everyday, even if they insist that they don't. Whyen your raised with these beliefs its almost like human nature to carry them with you and pin them on people as you get older. Ever race has different stereotypes that surround them. People may stereotype chinese or japanese people as very intelligent just because the countries they are from are very high in technology. they also say that the chinese people all work at nail salons becuase that is mostly who you will see in the salons. All arabs or iraqis or any other countries in that area are apparently all terrotists. All mexicans are poor, or illegal, or disrespectful, are all of the above. blacks are athletic and promisucous and tend to be violent. whites are snotty and rich and don't care about anybody but themselves. While a lot of people in these specific races do fall into these stereotypes, not everybody is categorized like that. Not only people of different races are stereotypes, even people of opposite sex are stereotyped. Men are aggressive, and dominant, and messy, and rough. while women are neat and clean, and polite and proper and submissive. Lesbians are butch like females who tend to be into softball and have very manly like traits and not lady like at all. And the gays are usually hair stylists or cothes designers and very feminine and worried about how they look and talk with thier hands a lot and use words like omg and honey. every single person, no matter what gender, what rce, what culture, or religion, everybody stereotypes and is stereotyped. I think that since the most diversity is shown in schools that teachers should educate their students about the different diversities that surround them. people need to understand others and their way of life before they can judge or stereotype them.

2)My father was born in Mexico, and my mother here in the U.S. Therefore, that clearly makes me Mexican. When I tell people that, the first thing that comes out of thier mouths is, "Well, you don't look Mexican." How exactly do Mexicans look? Dark complected, Long curly brown thick hair, Brown eyes? Then after people try to tell me that I am not Mexican they use it against me. They just assume that since I am Mexican that I can speak fluent spanish. So many times at work my boss would ask me to translate something to a fellow employee and I would have to tell him to find somebody else because I was not fluent enough to complete the eask. Then everybody would moan and say" C'mon, your Mexican. you're supposed to know spanish." really? did i miss that in the "Being Mexican manual?" I'm apparently also supposed to know how to cook spanish food, and enjoy hot sauce in everything i eat, and how to salsa dance. (which I do =] ) Some of these labels has definitely had effects on me throughout my life. I have always tried to get as much sun as I can so that I can "look" Mexican. I ask my dad how to say everything in spanish and try to remember so that next time somebody asks for a translator im there to help! i try to stand behind my aunt or dad or grandma as they cook and try to remember how they make the amazing food that they do. Everybody hates the stereotypes, yet they try their hardest to fit into them. That is irony at its best!

Hey Erica, I really like the stereotypes you present for all of the races you mention. for example, I really like way you explain that men are often considered dominant and aggressive while women are considered polite, neat, and clean. these are in fact very commonly used stereotypes in many aspects of people's everyday lives. From Relationships to activities, people classify men and women by these "definitions". However, when you mention that schools are the most diverse places, I don't believe thats entirely accurate. Someone else could have the opinion that a workplace or somewhere else could be more diverse place than a school, even though you may think otherwise. other than that, nice post

  2. Erica, you did a great job in explaining different types of stereotypes. Although, you did have some spelling errors. But, I liked your personal stereotype post. You are very right about the way people look.

  3. Great post. It is true that everyone stereotypes and its not like they do it on purpose that is just how people are raised. And with every race, gender or creed comes a stereotype.

  4. Great post! The mexican stereotype was very true. I know a few illegals that are great friends and it hurts to see people treat them the way they are treated. Great ideas!
