1. I think a good example of a group that is stereotyped is that of the Chinese/Asian ethnic groups. People of this ethnicity are generally stereotyped as "smart" and very good in math/school. I think one cause of this stereotypical method of people of the Asian decent is because countries for example,China are very advanced in technology. They are a lot more advanced in technology than the United States is, so I think that is why people stereotype them. I also think they get stereotyped about being good in school and math is because they go to school all year long unlike us American kids. I do not think that this stereotype is generally a "negative" stereotype because I would take them as a compliment, but if I had to say how our society can provide a healthy positive image to the younger generation is by just explaining to them that the way some Asian people live their life is a lot different than ours, and that they are more strict and serious about education than the U.S. is, but that does not generally mean they are all "smart".
2. If I had to pick a defining term that I have been labeled I would pick being called "gullible." A lot of times people will tell me something that they are going to do and I always have my hopes up so high for it and then a lot of times I end up getting let down, and also if someone tells me something I will most likely believe it even if it is far fetched. The effects on my life of being called gullible makes it really hard for me to distinguish the line between the truth and a fib. So now that I get called that, I am very skeptical about everything people say, even if they can prove it is right I always will have a doubt about a factor of the situation. I typically think this is a bad quality because now it is hard for me to believe some people.
I think your blog explains very well how the stereotypical definition of the Chinese/Asian people came to be. I like that you went in-depth to explain how your label has affected you. I don’t think I can give you anything to work on because you explained everything really well. GREAT JOB!
ReplyDeleteI agree with you completely about the asian stereotypes. However I do disagree that it's all positive because this stereotype could definitely effect the way an asian child's self esteem who had a learning disability. If they are told they are supposed to be practically geniuses than I bet the fact that they struggle, kills them. I loved how you said we can provide a healthy positive image by explaining to society their ways of life and education are much different in Asia which in turn effects their work ethic more so than their actual smarts. Good job! =]
ReplyDeleteI also used an example of the chinese/japanese stereotypes. I think this is one of the most popular. you did a great job on really breaking the stereotype down. also for your second answer. I too have been stereotyped as gullable or naiive. it is a very difficult quality to have becuase it is extremely hard to try to pick out who you think you can trust and who you can't.

ReplyDeleteHey Jennifer, I really like your example of stereotypes being used on people of certain ethnicity. Asians are stereotyped extremely often on the fact that they are smarter than everyone else based solely on the fact that they are Asian. However, when you try and justify this stereotype by suggesting that china is a lot more technologically advanced than the united states, I think you make a vague assumption. yes, some aspects are more developed in china, however many are more advanced in the united states. I don't think that should be used to justify the stereotype. Your post was great otherwise :)
I loved the stereotype you chose! I was going to choose that one, and that they are very flexible. There are a lot of Chinese people that are excellent in gymnastics. Also, I disagree that China is more advanced than the U.S. and that that's the reason why they're smarter. I don't really know why they are, but I agree with the stereotype. haha :)
ReplyDeleteThey are usually thought of as alot smarter than most of us. Id have to disagree about them being more advanced than us though, Id like to think were better off than everyone else:). But other than that it was a great post.
