1. As I was surfing through the web, I found a website with several stereotype jokes about ethnic groups. One of the jokes was "You know the world is off tilt when the best rapper is a white guy [Eminem], the best golfer is a black guy [Tiger Woods], the tallest basketball player is Chinese [Yao Ming, 7'6"], and Germany doesn't want to go to war [in Iraq]." This is VERY stereotypical. These are the types of stereotypes people talk about everyday. When people think of Germans, they think of Nazis, which defines them as enemies of the world. So you would expect Germans to go into war, because people think they like to kill innocent people from other ethnic groups. But not all Germans are that way. They do not all agree with what Hitler did to the Jews. A way we can stop stereotypes is by parents not teaching their children stereotypes about other ethnic groups. People grow up thinking a certain way about certain groups of people because their families feel that way about those people. Organizations and schools need to let kids think about back at a time they were guilty of stereotyping someone. They need to ask themselves how true their assumptions where when they finally got to know the individual whom they stereotyped. Chances are that their assumptions were proven wrong.
2. One such label that's been applied to me is an artist. The effects that this labeling has had on my life are positive. I love to draw and everytime people see my artwork they admire it. Just the other day, I drew a large picture of my boyfriend and I, and my whole family kept saying, "WOW, she's an artist!" This made me feel really good inside. I felt very complemented and it encourages me to draw more and more. I have a strong passion for drawing, because of the label people give me when they see my artwork.
I really like the graphic you chose, it fits in perfectly with this whole topic and it gives a variety of ethnic groups as opposed to just one. Also, I like how you chose Germans to analyze because I wouldn't even have thought of Germans as having a really strong stereotype and didn't even think about the Nazi aspect of it, you obviously put a lot of thought into this.
ReplyDeleteI like the cartoon you chose, and the stereotype joke you analyzed. I disagree with you about stereotypes simply being the parents faults. I think that could play a role, but not as significant as you portray. I believe that peers need to be looked at and more so the media. History repeats itself, and the media has been an issue since we have been able to mass produce it. Think back too, on Malcom X and how he was influence by literature of all things, and classified all white poeple horribly.
ReplyDeleteI did though like your analyzation of the German sterotype, people over look them nowadays.
I agree with Carly. Germans were the farthest thing from my mind, but indeed they are so strongly stereotyped these days! I really like your graphic, it not only draws in your attention, but it breaks things down so that just about anyone can relate to it. I think you did a great job.
ReplyDeleteVery nice job on your post, Valeria. You have a great grasp of your grammar and mechanics to establish your credibility as a source.
